Our most consistent months for surf are June, July and August. As you move away from those months, the surf gets less consistent with December and January being our least consistent months. However, it is impossible to predict Mother Nature and there is always a chance for surf.

Where is our Hotel located in relation to the beaches? / ¿Dónde se encuentra nuestro Hotel en relación a las playas?

Our Hotel is located inside the pueblo of San Juanico and is two blocks from First Point, the most family friendly beach.  It is approximately a 20-minute walk to Second Point where most surfers reside.

Almost all vendors in the pueblo only accept pesos.  The Hotel accepts all forms of payment and uses the exchange rate of 18.5 to 1 when exchanging dollars for pesos.

8am to 10am and 5pm to 10pm.  Hours may be shortened and/or we may be closed depending on guests and the season.

Is there electricity? / Hay electricidad?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but with a limit.  The electricity in town is regulated and only offered between 4 hours to 12 hours and sometimes not at all.  That means the Hotel only has electricity for the same hours.  From time to time we run our generator and it is running between 11pm and 7am between June and September to run our AC units.

Typically for all US, Mexican and International carriers there is no service in San Juanico.  There is a landline at one of the stores close to the Hotel and costs $25 MX per 5 minutes.

It is satellite internet and the best available for Scorpion Bay, however, it is not 100% reliable.  It is not always capable of uploading, downloading, sending large files, video calls and streaming is rarely possible.  It is best to browse and check email only.

Yes, and it operates between 11pm and 7am during the months of July, August and September due to the severe heat.  There is inherent noise when it is operating that the guests must endure but it is preferred to the heat.  (The generator is located underneath the Apartment.)  Guests may pay a price for the same service in other months if desired.

Yes, and they are only operable when the generator is on.  The Hotel runs the generator every night between 11pm and 7am July, August and September.  Guests may pay a price for the same service in other months if desired.  All rooms have operating fans.

The water at the Hotel is from a well and clean and you can use it to brush your teeth without hesitation.  However, each room comes with drinkable, purified water and there are stations in the restaurant and the outdoor kitchen with the same drinkable, purified water for guests to drink.

Will I arrive at the Hotel before it gets dark? / ¿Llegaré al hotel antes de que oscurezca?

Accepted Answer

Most flights that arrive in the afternoon at the Loreto Airport will allow for you to arrive before dark.  The only exception might be in the winter when the days are shorter and you might consider a hotel prior to traveling to San Juanico.  The wait for a rental car is short and the drive should take you no more than 3 and a half hours from the airport.
 
La mayoría de los vuelos que llegan por la tarde al aeropuerto de Loreto le permitirán llegar antes del anochecer. La única excepción podría ser en invierno cuando los días son más cortos y podría considerar un hotel antes de viajar a San Juanico. La espera para un coche de alquiler es corta y el viaje en coche no debería llevarle más de 3 horas y media desde el aeropuerto.

Where can I purchase gasoline? / ¿Dónde puedo comprar gasolina?

San Juanico has a few shops that sell gasoline at a premium.  'Los Chinos' or 'El Charro,' sells gas right in town and they are local business who have been around for a long time! Another option would be to fill your tank at a gas station in Zaragoza or Insurgentes on the way in and on the way out.
 
San Juanico tiene algunas tiendas que venden gasolina con una prima. 'Los Chinos' o 'El Charro', venden gasolina en el mismo pueblo y son negocios locales que han existido por mucho tiempo! Otra opción sería llenar el tanque en una gasolinera en Zaragoza o Insurgentes al entrar y al salir.

That is not considered a proper road and requires very special vehicles to traverse that stretch.

If you have to ask, we do not recommend it. The path requires 4-wheel drive and previous knowledge of the area as there are no signs and stretches with no definable road.

Yes, we are one of three places to rent surfboards and we offer priority to guests of the Hotel.  Longboards are $15 per day and SUPs are $20 per day.  Ask us for our list of boards and we can reserve your choice in your reservation in advance.  Others may rent our boards on a walk-in basis and a credit card and identification are required to rent.

Accepted Answer

Yes, no matter what time of year, we always recommend bringing a wetsuit. If you are visiting within December-May, the water is most likely going to require a full suit. If you are visiting within June-November, you might get away with a spring suit or nothing at all. With frequent offshore winds, we see a lot of upwelling of cold waters that can drastically change the temperature. During the summer you may not need it at all, but throw it in just incase!

Sí, sea cual sea la época del año, siempre recomendamos llevar un traje de neopreno. Si está de visita entre diciembre y mayo, lo más probable es que el agua requiera un traje completo. Si está de visita entre junio y noviembre, es posible que se salga con la suya con un traje de primavera o nada en absoluto. Con vientos marinos frecuentes, vemos mucho afloramiento de aguas frías que pueden cambiar drásticamente la temperatura. Durante el verano puede que no lo necesites en absoluto, ¡pero tíralo por si acaso!

Yes, but it is recommended to bring your own.  We have a small number of tops, spring suits, full suits and booties that have been donated over the years and each item can be rented for $5 per day.
